先日、Patience & Prudence 版の「いちごの片思い(Tonight You Belong To Me)」を聴いてすっかり参ってしまいました。元来のアイドル好きの血が騒ぐ一品ですね。「いちごの片思い(Tonight You Belong To Me)」というと、ナンシー・シナトラのイメージで固定されてしまっていたので新鮮でした。このPatience & Prudence姉妹ですが意外と日本語情報が少なくてあまり詳細理解しきれていないのです。

Mark McIntyre was an orchestra leader, pianist, and songwriter who accompanied Frank Sinatra on piano during the 1940s.[1] In the summer of 1956, he brought his daughters, 11-year-old Prudence and 14-year-old Patience,[2] into the Liberty Records studio in Los Angeles, California. They made a demonstration recording of the song, "Tonight You Belong to Me," which had been a hit for Gene Austin in 1927, and was written by Billy Rose and Lee David. Liberty signed them and immediately released a recording of the girls singing the song as a commercial single, (with the B-side, "A Smile and a Ribbon," a composition with music by Mark McIntyre) and by September the song reached #4 on the Billboard charts[1] and #28 in the UK Singles Chart,[3] and was the biggest selling record put out by Liberty for two years. It sold over one million copies and reached gold record status.[4]

14歳と11歳の姉妹ということで、アイドルと言うより童謡カテゴリにいれても良いかもですね。彼女のお父様がキーマンだったのでしょうか、その繋がりは後に日本において「いちごの片思い」を大ヒットさせたナンシー・シナトラとしてそのお父様フランク・シナトラに人脈繋がりですか。「いちごの片思い」の輪が形成されています。

Liberty Records (also the home of rocker Eddie Cochran) signed "Patience and Prudence" and rushed the tune into distribution. The bouncy song became a hit, charting at #4 in September of 1956 and became Liberty's biggest selling record for two years. Their follow-up single, "Gonna Get Along Without Ya Now" charted at #11 at the end of '56. The B-side, "The Money Tree," also charted. But alas, Patience and Prudence enjoyed no further chart success when six additional singles released between 1957-59 failed to chart. Since the 1950's was basically a 45rpm market, it is no surprise that there was no Patience and Prudence album. Here is a little trivia for you folks- the Patience and Prudence version of "Tonight You Belong To Me" was the #34 song for all of 1956, in addition to placing at #428 among the top 5,000 songs of the rock era (1955-94).

基本的には一発屋（One-Hit-Wonder）だったのですね。なので情報も少ないわけですが、残された曲は最高です。ところで、一発屋というよりこのワン・ヒット・ワンダーという呼び方が気に入りました。また、この「いちごの片思い」のように楽曲だけが国を超えて歌い継がれてたりするのですね。今回は追求できませんでしたが、彼女たちの曲では「Gonna Get Along without Ya Now」のカヴァーもいろいろと面白そうです。

    1927年のオリジナルは、あの私のこれまた大好きな「私の青空」のジーン・オースティンなのでした。このころの曲もその後のポップスの核なるようなメロディが生み出されているのですね。この曲がガールポップのスタンダードになるとはです。

    このジャネット・クラインという方も以前よりかなり気になりな方なのですがそのままです。このカバーも素晴らしいこの曲にはウクレレアレンジ似合いますね。YouTube上でもウクレレアレンジが非常に多いです。ちょっと調べただけでもいろいろと面白いことが発掘。ジョージ・ハリスンもファンだったとか。
  • Beautiful scene from "The Jerk" [1979]
    映画「The Jerk（天国から落ちた男）」のシーンがウクレレアレンジイメージなのでしょうか。今ひとつ時系列的な裏はとれていないのですがそんな感じです。観たことはない映画なのですが、なんとなくいいシーンですね。
  • ベニシスターズ / イチゴの片思い
    自分の記憶ではもっと日本人歌手によるカヴァーが多いかと思ったのですが今ひとつ思い出せません。ものすごく可愛いアイドルによるバージョンが有ったのですけどね、どのアイドルであるか思い出せません。思い出したら追記しておきます。追記：もちろん大瀧御大のシリア・ポール版もあるのですが日本語版ではないのですよね。そしてこの曲聴いたらなぜか渡辺満里奈ちゃんを聴きたくなったと思ったら彼女の「ばっちりキスしましょ」が完全なカヴァーでした。しかも凄く可愛いバージョンです。動画はないようですね。

その他にもたくさんカヴァーがあるようです、しかも比較的最近のものも多いようです。
